Mountain River, Huon Valley

Landcare Tasmania in partnership with Simon Robers from Upper Huon Wildlife Monitoring Group and Freshwater Ecologist and Waterbug Blitz consultant, John Gooderham, and Huon Valley Council are running another river health and water quality training workshop in Mountain River. Our last River Health Workshop in 2022 had 50 attendees!

In this workshop, we will be focusing on the impacts of climate change to waterway health and the role riparian vegetation plays in creating resilient ecosystems. Participants will be taught how to use turbidity tubes, pH meters, thermometers and taxonomic keys to identify waterbugs and test water quality down at Mountain River, so that afterwards you will be able to monitor water quality yourself, and help out a citizen science program- the Waterbug Survey.

The sessions are suitable for young children to adults with participants using a mix of basic tools (hand lens, ice-cube tray and plastic spoon) and the Waterbug App, to identify live waterbugs.

Date: Saturday 09 August 2025

Time: 9.30am - 1.30pm, lunch provided

Location: Mountain River Hall, Mountain River.

What to expect:

  • Simon Roberts on the impact of climate change on waterway health and the work the Upper Huon Wildlife Monitoring Group have been doing to monitor the impact of low flows on macroinvertebrates in the Huon Valley, and how you can get involved too!
  • Hands-on water monitoring down at Mountain River, testing water quality and waterbugs with John Gooderham and Simon.
  • Learn about the importance of riparian vegetation by vegetation expert Cassie Strain, and how Landcare Tasmania can support its members with revegetation projects through the members toolbox and Project Bank.
  • Principal NRM, Michelle Joy, from Huon Valley Council on how their community nursery is supporting revegetation projects and waterway health in the municipality.
