Objective: We will be clearing weeds along a 290-meter stretch from the starting point to 25 Midway Point Esplanade.
The primary focus will be on removing African Boxthorn, a thorny shrub that can grow up to 5 meters in height. It’s a persistent and invasive species, weed of national significance and community assistance is essential for effective removal.
Safety and Access Information:
- Terrain: The working area includes steep slopes, so volunteers should be aware of the uneven ground and exercise caution while moving along the path.
- Protective Gear: Given the nature of the task, it is essential to wear the following items:
- Sturdy boots (jogging shoes or standard work shoes may not provide adequate protection from thorns).
- Long-sleeve shirts to protect arms from scratches.
- Sun protection (hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses) to prevent sun exposure.
- Eye protection (safety glasses or similar) to guard against thorny branches.
Provided Equipment:
- We try to provide hi-viz vests for visibility (if you have one, feel free to bring it along).
- Heavy-duty gloves will be made available for protection while handling the weeds (please bring your own if you have a suitable pair).
Volunteer Expectations:
- Volunteers to arrive on time for the event briefing at 10:00 am.
- Participants will be assigned to small groups to work along different parts of the 290-meter stretch.
- Volunteers should listen to safety instructions provided at the start of the session.
- Each person is responsible for bringing personal water bottles to stay hydrated and any additional sun protection they may need.
This event is a great opportunity for the community to come together and contribute to the health and biodiversity of the local environment. We are excited to have as many hands on deck as possible to make a lasting impact.
