Eastern Barred Bandicoot Conservation
Andrew Baldwin, NRM North - Threatened Species Conservation
Andrew will be speaking about partnerships for threatened species conservation in urban /peri urban landscapes.
Since 2018, NRM North has collaborated with local landholders, community groups and councils to deliver the Eastern Barred Bandicoot Project with the aim of ‘Safeguarding northern Tasmania as a refuge for eastern barred bandicoot and other threatened species and communities’. The project took a multi-pronged approach to reducing threats and enhancing habitat for eastern barred bandicoots across the landscape.
Funded through the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program, the five-year project tailored activities for rural, semi-rural and urban landowners, providing relevant, practical conservation advice through trusted partners to achieve practice changes as well as on-ground habitat establishment.
With over 90 rural and peri-urban properties plus more than 60 urban bandicoot-friendly gardens developed the project demonstrates how with support local communities can come together to maintain healthy landscapes. The involvement of partners West Tamar Landcare Group, the Tasmanian Land Conservancy, West Tamar and Northern Midlands Councils, and the University of Tasmania will help to ensure the legacy of the project endures despite relatively short-term government funding cycles.
