Managing Feral Cats

Conrad Daniels, Director of Bruny Agriculture and Enviro Services

Conrad has been working on Bruny Island removing feral cats from the landscape using trapping as well as thermal shooting in some areas.

This panel session hosted by Gill Basnett, the National Cat and Fox Management Coordinator for the Invasive Species Council, offers a platform for a meaningful discussion on feral cat management. This important session aims to facilitate knowledge exchange, encourage audience engagement, and inspire collective efforts to address this pressing ecological issue.

As an island, Tasmania has some of the most significant feral cat impacts compared with mainland Australia and even the world. Due to the cool, wet climate in Tasmania, cat-borne diseases like Toxoplasmosis and Sarcocystosis are able to remain viable in the environment for a lot longer, increasing their potential to infect.  These diseases, together with wildlife predation, make cats one of the most significant threats to our natural ecosystems and production landscapes.
