Swift Parrot Recovery - A Focus on Habitat
Margie Morrice, Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania
The Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania (NRE Tas), through the Threatened Species Section, provides management advice and monitors in varying detail the 685 threatened species listed under the Threatened Species Protection Act 1995, including 194 fauna.
This includes the critically endangered Swift Parrot that breeds only in Tasmanian forests.
In light of the continuing decline of Swift Parrots, the Tasmanian Government initiated the Swift Parrot Recovery Project with a commitment of $1 Million over 4 years. The Project commenced in 2022 and has been implementing a range of initiatives to support the long-term viability of the wild Swift Parrot population.
The threats and issues affecting Swift Parrots are complex, and this Project is coordinating efforts across jurisdictions, landscapes and stakeholders to achieve outcomes across critical management interventions and knowledge gaps.
Margie will present on initiatives that focus on understanding and protecting the Swift Parrot habitat.
