Landcare in Aotearoa New Zealand

Nick Edgar, NZ Landcare Trust

Nick will provide an overview of the NZ Landcare Trust, the peak landcare organisation in Aotearoa New Zealand.  This will cover key programs of work and new projects, including a landscape-scale restoration project to enhance biodiversity outcomes for native bird species. New Zealand is experiencing significant growth in the number of farmer-led catchment groups across the country, forming to address water quality issues being experienced in many of NZ's waterways.  Nick will describe the role that Landcare is taking in supporting these groups and building their capacity to achieve improvements in waterway health.

Dr Nick Edgar has a background in applied freshwater management, with past research efforts focused on improving the water quality of lake ecosystems.

Nick has worked as an environmental scientist for regional government (Waikato Regional Council), as a natural resource specialist in academia (Central Queensland University, Australia) and as a research manager for the NZ Landcare Trust.

Nick has been the Chief Executive of the NZ Landcare Trust since 2007 and has been involved in a range of catchment management projects and initiatives in New Zealand and internationally.

He has a keen interest in community involvement in resource management decision-making and action, in particular, working with farmers to implement practical land, water, and biodiversity enhancement projects.
