Friends of Eagles Point

The Friends of Eagle Point is a fledgling group based on the eastern bank (Narawntapu National Park side) of the Rubicon Rivulet. Over the last approx. 5 years we have observed a decline in species of birds. Some have not been seen for a number of years. The Rubicon is also renowned for its infestation of rice grass (Spartina anglica). We are observing first-hand the impacts of this invasive species. It is causing major alterations to the water flow by obstructing the natural flushing of the estuary; causing major silt build up. Natural food production, necessary to maintain a health marine and bird habitat, is severely depleted. Specifically we have noted a loss of area for wading birds which are not limited areas of extreme low tide. A natural water outlet is now under threat which will no doubt affect the natural tidal flora. We are in the process of contacting neighbouring landholders in an attempt to establish a management plan to either restrict or inhibit the spread of this invasive weed species
