Tassie shines at the 2025 National Landcare Awards

Tasmania had plenty to celebrate at this year’s 2025 National Landcare Awards, with two inspiring winners recognised on the national stage for their extraordinary efforts in caring for land, water, wildlife, and community.

Vivienne Briggs – Australian Government Individual Landcarer Award

A huge round of applause for Vivienne Briggs, winner of the Australian Government Individual Landcarer Award.

This award honours an individual who has shown exceptional leadership and dedication to Landcare, and Vivienne’s contribution is nothing short of remarkable.

With more than 25 years working with Australian wildlife, Vivienne has focused much of her energy on conserving platypus, penguins, and birds in Burnie. For the past 20 years, she has been at the forefront of platypus conservation in Tasmania—both professionally and through her volunteer work.

In 2014, Vivienne founded and continues to coordinate Friends of Fernglade, helping to make Fernglade one of the best places in the state to view wild platypuses. Her tireless efforts have inspired countless others to connect with, and care for, the natural world.

Congratulations Vivienne, on this well-deserved recognition!

Kingston Beach Coastcare – Greyhound Coastcare Award

Another big win for Tasmania went to Kingston Beach Coastcare, the proud recipients of the 2025 Greyhound Coastcare Award.

For more than 25 years, this passionate group has been working hands-on to protect and restore the coastal and dune ecosystems along one of Hobart’s busiest beaches. Their efforts include habitat restoration, community education, and building long-term stewardship of the coastline.

The Coastcare Award acknowledges groups who have made significant improvements to Australia’s coastal and marine environments. Kingston Beach Coastcare exemplify this through their work restoring sand dunes, protecting threatened species, removing invasive weeds and waste, and reducing the impact of urban pressures such as stormwater runoff and foot traffic on sensitive areas.

Well done to Kingston Beach Coastcare for your incredible dedication and long-standing impact!

Celebrating local heroes

It’s wonderful to see the hardworking people in our communities recognised for the difference they make. This is where the true magic of Landcare happens—local people rolling up their sleeves to care for the land and water.

A huge congratulations to both Vivienne Briggs and Kingston Beach Coastcare, as well as all the nominees who continue to inspire and lead the way in caring for country.
