Landcare Tas Working Groups - Advocating for issues important to members
Landcare Tasmania has a number of active working groups providing direction and advice to our program development and community advocacy addressing key issues.
Below are examples of working groups across several key areas. These groups are made up of representatives from our Members Council, Board, general membership, staff and relevant professionals that support our organisation and community Landcare in Tasmania.
Rodenticides Working Group
Our Rodenticides Working Group is providing great input to our awareness raising program, is engaging with scientists to ensure it is based on solid information, and is also assisting with the roll out of our two Rodenticides projects funded from the Communities Environment Program with the support of Federal members of parliament Julie Collins (Franklin) and Andrew Wilkie (Clark). The group has also recently pulled together our submission to the review of anticoagulant rodenticides by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Management Authority.
Sustainable Agriculture Working Group
Also critical to the heart of Landcare is sustainable agriculture, with a new Working Group seeking to bring high quality information to our member and supporters. Check out Members Council Chair Theresa Chapman's recent interviews on cover cropping trials.
Members: Is your Landcare group interested in sustainable or regenerative agriculture? The Sustainable Agriculture Working Group, led by Andrew Doube, would like to hear from you. Do you have any feedback on how Landcare Tas can more effectively support your group in caring for our productive landscapes? Please contact Andrew at: [email protected]
Cat Management Working Group
The Cat Management Working Group is looking into ways to address impacts of feral cats on native wildlife and farm production. The Working Group is keeping up with proposed legislative changes to cat management in the State, looking at practical ways for managing feral cats (e.g. through various types of trapping), and is also preparing a submission to the Inquiry of the House of Representatives Standing Committee on the Environment into cats (deadline 30 July).
Members: Contact Adam Holmstrom (Landcare Tas Members Council) [email protected] if you would like to discuss Landcare Tasmania's submission.
Member Stories
From the northwest to the southeast, our members really have achieved great things for the environment this month! If you or your community group need support on a project, why not become a member today, and submit your project ideas to our Project Bank.
*We have trees available RIGHT NOW* for current members thanks to sponsorship from Fifteen Trees. If you need trees (particularly Eucalypts), please log in to our website and put your project in the Project Bank now. Priority will be given to those who have not received funding or plants from us in the past year, but you can still be put on the list for next year if we run out of plants.
Seymour Community Action Group Inc (SCAGI) - Wetland Restoration Project
Support received through Landcare Tasmania: State Govt's Landcare Action Grants, plant sponsorship from Fifteen Trees, discounted materials through Waratah of Tasmania, and extra volunteer coordination.
This group has been really busy with a Solstice Planting day on 20th June, and another planting day on 18-19th July with the UTAS Landcare Group helping out with extra volunteers. With 400 new plants in the ground, SCAGI is looking ahead to nurturing the trees & creating a little haven for flora, fauna and community to enjoy.
Oldina Landcare Group - Native plant corridor
Support received through Landcare Tasmania: plant sponsorship through Fifteen Trees
Member Liz Vanderlinde says "We chose a variety of plants to achieve different flowering times of the plants and therefore be attractive to birds and insects and fauna for most of the year”.
The Krabbe family had the site prepared and everything ready to go. The weather was unpredictable but we lined up a few members of Oldina Landcare Group and when there was a dry moment planted out some 90 trees/shrubs. Overall it was more work than socializing but we had a good time and got the job done quickly.
Thanks To Liz, Ian and Brenda, Carl and Miriam, and Krabbe family of Oldina Landcare Group, Landcare Tasmania and Fifteen Trees.
Penny Laskey, Individual Member - Erosion prevention at Gunns Plains
Support received through Landcare Tasmania: Tasmanian Landcare Fund (TLF) grant (through donations from the JM Roberts Trust), plant sponsorship through Fifteen Trees, planning advice from Landcare Tas staff.
On this north-facing eroding watercourse on the slopes above Gunns Plains road, 860 plants have now been planted. Both the guards and the stakes were recycled from a very large revegetation project nearby.
Southern Beaches Land and Coastcare - Jack's Flat
Support received through Landcare Tasmania: Tasmanian Landcare Fund (TLF) grant (through donations from the JM Roberts Trust)
Southern Beaches Landcare Coastcare is celebrating 20 years of caring for the precious Jack's Flat!
Landcare Tas is proud to have supported some of the latest work with a grant from the Tasmanian Landcare Fund to remove blackberry and other weeds.
"What began as a virtual paddock of grass and weeds has transformed into an essential native habitat corridor for wildlife and also an important green space for locals to enjoy."
Online Outreach Video Series
Landcare Tasmania team member Kat Traill met up with Ruth Mollison, Landcare Tas volunteer and owner of Island Seeds, who shared her expertise on collecting and propagating saltbush cuttings in this lovely video. If you missed the first in the series, collecting and storing Everlasting daisy seeds, you can find it here.
“Some natives are easier to grow from cuttings than seeds, saltbush is one of those.” says Ruth.
