Achievement Plans
We aim to plant at least 1200 native seedlings annually in the Kentish Municipality through public tree planting days, coordinated by our Group. Planting sites are chosen through a transparent, public process that focuses on restoring water way health, building connectivity between fragmented plant communities, stabilizing erroding slopes and establishing farm shelter belts.
Methods
Since 2022 our Group has planted over 7,000 native seedlings in the Kentish Municipality through public tree planting days organized by the Group. We call for Expressions of Interest from landowners, and select around 8 sites annually which best address our criteria for restoring environmental health, particularly around waterways and on farms. Landholders commit to site prep and maintenance, our Group coordinates and organizes the whole process voluntarily, including the organization of public tree planting days open to all. The Group also sources funding to enable purchase of seedlings and planting accessories. The model has worked very successfully and has built environmental health through the municipality, and also strengthened community connections through skill sharing and community working bees. Plant survival rates are closely monitored, aiming for at least 90% survival - this figure has been generally exceeded across our planting sites in past years. We aim to continue this program into 2027 and beyond, and we seek funding to enable this
Natural Values
We seek to continue a program to plant native, local provenance seedlings to restore habit, promote biodiversity, build environmental connection, enhance and restore riparian health though tree planting days open to the public, also involving school groups. By participating in this activity, individuals and landowners learn the skills and acquire experience and knowledge to initiate their own tree planting efforts on lands they manage.
Outcomes
Increased environmental health through strategic planting of native species to enable restoration of priority waterways and farmland through the municipality. Increased community health and connection through participation in public tree planting events, open to all. Increased knowledge and of how to effectively plant and maintain native seedlings, and application of this knowledge at other sites across the municipality.
