Milford Forest - why it matters and what you can do to help
Milford Forest has been managed by the Lewis family since 1829 for conservation purposes. It consists of old growth E. viminalis woodland which has never been logged nor cleared, has not been grazed for 100+ years, and extends down to the the waterline, being "where the bush meets the sea", and is unique in SE Tasmania, especially given its proximity to Hobart. It is home to several endemic and threatened species of flora and fauna, including masked owls and wedge-tailed eagles. It is also an important nesting site for many birds from the region, given the large number of old trees with nesting hollows.
The group aims to continue the preservation of this remnant forest habitat into the future. We hold regular working bees for e.g. weed identification and removal, litter removal, to prevent excessive wattle regrowth from shading out threatened species, bird counts, floral surveys and other activities. The aim is to preserve Milford Forest for future generations and especially for its non-human inhabitants.
