Natural Values

This project will protect and restore the riparian zone and wetland habitat of Island Dam and Moores Creek by excluding livestock, revegetating with locally native plants, and managing invasive weeds. The dam’s five islands will be enhanced as wildlife refuges, supporting breeding and foraging habitat for waterbirds, raptors, and threatened species such as the Sea Eagle, Wedge-tailed Eagle, Grey Goshawk, Masked Owl, Tasmanian Devil, and Eastern Quoll. The project will improve water quality, increase aquatic vegetation cover, and enhance connectivity between the dam, Moores Creek, and surrounding habitat. Seasonal monitoring from the new bird observation and conservation hub will track changes in species diversity, vegetation health, and water quality, while providing a resource for education and community engagement through school visits, citizen science, and Landcare group activities.

Outcomes

Water quality improvement (reduced turbidity and nutrient load)Signage and interpretation boardsIncreased biodiversity — improved habitat for waterbirds, raptors, amphibians, and aquatic lifeReduced greenhouse gas emissions from the damEnhanced water security and resilience to droughtEducational facility for ongoing community and school engagementA long-term demonstration site for farm dam enhancement in the Coal River Catchment
