Achievement Plans

Kunzea ericoides is a mainland native plant species which has very high invasive potential in the Break O Day municipality due to its difficulty in distinguishing it from local native plant species and its prolific seed production. There are a number of small populations which our group has been working on however additional resources are needed to control and eradicate these and other locations before they spread further. We aim to work towards eradication of Kunzea ericoides from Break O Day.

Methods

The Kunzea will be controlled by careful spot spraying or cut and painting of known locations as well as mapping and ongoing follow up and monitoring to work towards eradication.

Natural Values

Kunzea ericoides is spreading into a number of Conservation Areas including St Helens Point Conservation Area and Bay of Fires Conservation Area and has the potential to out compete understorey species including threatened species such as Conospermum hookeri, Hibbertia virgata, Acacia ulicifolia, Euphrasia collinus ssp deflexifolia and degrade New Holland Mouse habitat Timely intervention now will prevent this becoming a unmanageable or very expensive problem in a decade from now. The project will also map all locations to ensure long term follow up and monitoring occurs
