Achievement Plans
We will plant 100 native tree and understory seedlings germinated from island seeds, as per the HI Vegetation Condition Assessment report; adjacent to remnant, coastal eucalyptus stands. Funding will address threats posed by erosion, weed infestation, habitat degradation and will improve threatened bird breeding capacity against a history of intensive farming and subsequent neglect.
Methods
Each year we engage/ train volunteers to collect and germinate island seed for future planting and as an island seed bank. We prepare the planting site, alongside professionals as appropriate. We meet for one or two weekends each planting season, planting 100 tree and understory root stock, check on past plantings and weed sites as required. We remove plastics along the foreshore.
Natural Values
on NRM South coastal vegetation and fauna habitat data rated HI most highly for both vegetation and fauna significance.
It is a sea bird rookery complex (SRC) under TasVeg; a threatened vegetation community. The vegetation provides habitat, including for over 400 short tailed shearwaters and little penguins. It is remnant habitat for the sea eagles, forty spotted pardalote and Swift Parrots.
Over 47 bird species have been identified. it is a key stepping stone for many mobile fauna moving south to Bruny Island.
