We are working with Parks and Wildlife to rehabilitate degradation caused by illegal off road vehicle activity. This project will include revegetation, erosion control, fencing to limit access and a community/user education program
Methods
A ground program will be initiated to repair past and recent damage from illegal offroad vehicle use . This will include the use of new signs, rocks and fencing to limit/close off access and ecological restoration works. The onground works will be complimented by a comprehensive educational program to make off road users , tourists and the local community aware of the impacts of off road vehicles, the natural values of the St Helens Point area and where use of off road vehicles is permitted
Natural Values
St Helens Point Conservation Area is a threatened plant species hotspot with a number of records for plant species such as Connospermum hookeri, Hibbertia virgata, Euphrasis collinus deflexifolia, Baumea articulata. There are a number of high quality freshwater wetlands which are in excellent ecological condition but threatened by illegal off road vehicle access, Threatened vegetation communities Melaleuca ericifolia forest and coastal E. viminalis forest are present. There is habitat for threatened species such as New Holland Mouse.
The area also has important Aboriginal Heritage values.
