Achievement Plans
We require funding to continue with the restoration of the Skyline Tier Radiata Pine plantation back to biodiverse native forest which has been ongoing since 2007 with approx 700ha restored to date.. We plan to use funding obtained to control pine wildlings in recovering native forests and to initiate control of pine wildlings post harvesting and burning of new areas targeted for ecological restoration (approx 500ha). The number of ha to be restored will depend on the amount of funding available.
Methods
The main activity is control of pine wildlings to allow for the assisted natural regeneration of high quality reference standard native forests. Methods include chainsawing, possible small scale felling with a feller buncher, cut and painting (loppers and dabbers) and hand pulling. Note we have produced a number of reports detailing the methodology including Native Restoration Plan Scamander Plantation 2013 which is available on our website.
Natural Values
Natural values being enhanced and restored include two threatened forest communities E.ovata and E.globulus forest, habitat for a range of threatened species including fauna Swift Parrot, Spotted Tailed Quoll, Chaostola Skipper butterfly, Giant Velvet Worm flora Heirochloe rariflora, Glycine latrobeana, Hovea corrickiae, Hibbertia calycina, Desmodium gunnii. More broadly the project is achieving landscape scale ecological restoration which is reconnecting coastal and hinterland habitats and regenerating a significant network of riparian ecosystems including coastal catchments.
