Achievement Plans
Jack's Flat is a 1.7-hectare Council-owned patch of former paddock on China Creek in Forcett. Ecological restoration commenced in 2000 and the site has significant community value. As we round our 21st year of caring for this restored patch, Southern Beaches Landcare/Coastcare is keen to support bringing cultural fire back to Jack’s Flat.
A cool burn by the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre's piyura kitina Land Management Team will improve the health of remnant grassland patches, reduce competitive pressure by weeds and return traditional management to this special place.
Methods
Burn preparations will be conducted by SBL/C and Sorell Council and include fuel break construction, risk management, community engagement and vegetation assessments. Contractors TAC will conduct the burn as per prescriptions for a cool cultural fire, applying fire where appropriate within the 1.7 hectare burn zone. The Dodges Ferry Fire Brigade have offered operational support in-kind on the day with a tanker and crew. SBL/C will monitor the site over the following months and conduct vegetation assessments and working bees to control weeds.
Natural Values
Some remnant grassland vegetation persists in the reserve and significant restoration efforts have been undertaken over two decades by SBL/C and the local community. The reserve has historically been a refuge for threatened native fauna such as the Eastern Barred Bandicoot, as well as and regionally significant flora, including orchids and lilies.
