Continued eradication of introduced ricegrass from the mudflats and estuaries in Circular Head to protect threatened temperate saltmarsh communities and all of its dependants; migratory shorebirds, commercial oyster fisheries and the recreational fisheries for bottom-dwelling fish. This is a long running project which has the support of the community and the important commercial stakeholders. Many years of work has gone into the project, and solid and steady progress is being made. We have over 100 km of coastline being covered by this program. It is absolutely vital that this work continues.
Methods
The standard operating procedure for this project has been refined over successive spray seasons since 2013. See separate 2019 report submitted to Landcare Tasmania. The Project will follow our existing guidelines for 1. Planning of the project, 2. Negotiation with land managers, 3. Engagement of Contractors, 4. Supervision of Contractors, 5. Follow-up spraying, 6. Mapping of all sprayed sites.
Natural Values
We are protecting Threatened Temperate Saltmarsh Communities, the feeding grounds for 23 species of migratory waders (including the threatened Eastern Curlew), other resident birds and animals (including the threatened Hooded Plover), the breeding grounds for ground dwelling fish such as flounder and flathead. Many areas are infested with ricegrass, but the saltmarsh communities show resilience in recovering once the invasive ricegrass is controlled.
