Achievement Plans
Revegetation of the riparian area, providing amenity and riparian and aquatic habitat, by planting local native species suitable for riparian areas and using the existing vegetation along Pipers River as a guide. We aim to provide a pleasant picnic area with shade and open sunny areas for people to use for picnics and recreation. The site has a DPIPWE water flow measuring station. It is mostly level and the Launceston City Council has used the area in the past for gravel dump and introduced rocks to reinforce and build up the bank following the 2016 floods. This project will improve the area.
Methods
We have a plan to provide riparian plantings, a picnic area, a track to the river and signage to inform visitors about the project. We will do the plantings and maintenance as a group involving local families and are ready to plant this spring as we did our planning before the covid 19 lockdown. We have good experience and local knowledge in the group and the capacity to plant the trees.
Natural Values
The vegetation here used to be wet white gum forest (threatened vegetation community) and we will plant species commonly found in that community along Pipers River, thus restoring some of the native forest values that have been lost. Many threatened fauna species have been recorded in and around Underwood and in Pipers River including giant freshwater crayfish, grey goshawk, eastern barred bandicoot, spotted-tailed quoll, wedge-tailed eagle and Tasmanian devil. The plantings will provide habitat for these species as well as many non threatened fauna found in the area including birds, platypus
