Achievement Plans
Erect a fence around the perimeter of the dam (approx 1.98Km) to exclude browsing farm animalsRemove Weed / Control weed species such as Box Thorn, Brairs, Surrated TussockPlant Endemic trees, shrub, grasses and sedges within the fenced area around the damImprove drought resistence. Trees and shrubs will provide some shading, but more importantly reduce wind intensity and evaporation of waterImprove the soil and water quality from run off into the dam. The area surrounding the dam and its tributaries are very high in salt and is visible with crusting on the surface. The addition of planting salt tolerant native plants should over time lower the water table and slow flows into the dam, as well as improving bio diverisificationSee a greater number of aquatic wildlife use the dam and surrounds for nesting and breedingWe estimate that we would require aroung 2000 trees and shrubs and around 1600 to 1800 native grass and sedge plugs fro planting The dam its self occupies 8ha the estimate area that will be fenced around the dam for planting is approximatetely 4ha
Methods
We will provide the ringlock fencing, posts, gates etc (2Km) and use our staff to contructWe will use our staff to remove and control weed species within the fenced area.We can provide some planting help and tools, but will require volunteers with planting Staking and mulching etcWe will seek advice for Landcare Tasmania as to what Native plants are endemic to our area and have the greatest salt tolerance and where best to plant themWe will be advised as to which nursery plants will be grown and their time line as to when to plant over winter (Wildseeds - Sorell, Nipaluna Nursery, Botantanique propagation Penna)
Natural Values
Increase Drought resilience Increase Natural Biodiversity by planting native trees/shrubs/ grasses and sedgesIncrease birdlife habitat (particularly water birds) over time as the plants begin to mature and provide protection and nesting sites that once where grazed by farm animalsImprove aquatic life with shading and wind protection around the damSlow runoff and reduce salt entering the damDemonstrate to others that if we can Enhance a Large dam (8ha) and significantly improve the biodivesisification of native plants (with planting them around the dam) it will have a major impact on water quality (for aquatic species frogs etc), native animals particularly aquatic birds and encourage other native animals into a fence protected area
Outcomes
We hope to see greater bio diversity of native wildlife, plants, grasses and sedges that suppot breeding and nesting sites as well as see and improvement of water quality, less evaporation of water bt slowing wind movement and creating a better more natural environment
Amount
More than $30k
