Achievement Plans
We plan to fence off an existing farm dam/pond that is part of a larger karst system within the Mayberry area. This would exclude cattle and feral deer from the water, reducing erosion and through planting of native vegetation we would like to restore the area so it can provide more habitat to native animals, particularly native birds that already live in the area. We would plant a mix of larger trees, shrubs and smaller water plants to provide a range of shelter and habitat to native animals. This would also act as a shelter belt for our livestock.
Methods
We are able to provide all labour assocaited with the project as well as fencing and planting equipment, as we have these readily available due to other projects we have already completed. Based off our previous experiences of planting our shelterbelts we would first complete the approximately 400 metres of fencing needed to exclude feral deer and livestock. We would then plant out the area with native vegetation (approximately 300 plants), we would plant out sections placing corflutes, weed mats and stakes.
Natural Values
This project would support the restoration of a farm dam/pond that is part of a larger karst system within the Mayberry area. It would exclude cattle and feral deer from the water reducing erosion. With the planting of native vegetation it would support the health of the pond and over time provide shelter for native animals. The project would be shared on the farm's social media to provide information about the project, the goals and how we are working to improve the land. This would provide exposure for Landcare, but also provide ideas and insights to other interested parties.
Outcomes
Be installing fencing we would reduce soil erosion around the dam.The native planting would increase biodiversity in the area, while also increasing habitat for native animals (once established).Through our social media, we would expect more people to be aware of Landcare and steps that farmers are taking to improve the land they care for.
