Achievement Plans
Plant approximately 1000 native seedlings around the dam perimeter and the upstram and downstream watercourse (which have already been fenced).
Spray select woody weeds around the dam surrounds and approach upstream and downstream water ways. Ensure that the herbicide is suitable to use in this situation.
Install approximate 250m of 50mm poly water pipe (including trenching, connections and backfill) to connect the existing water points to a new gravity water source. Thereby allowing the complete isolation of the dam from stock (cattle and sheep)
Methods
All work will be undertaken by my family (wife and kids) and close friends from our direct community. We do not require any expert advice and will utilise current best-pracitce in sourcing and planting seedlings and use a licensed contractor for weed control.
Natural Values
An existing farm dam on this property provides the central water point for 5 seperate paddocks. The use of the dam for stock water has led to the degradation and erosion of the dam banks and the ultimate reduction in water quality through stock defecation and physical damage from hoof impact. The outflow of this dam is a direct tributory of the Meander River. Through an earlier NRM Grant the dam has largely been excluded from animal access (by perimeter fencing) and alternate water sources provided. Connecting water lines and a storage buffer tank are required to connect the water lines to a proposed gravity network. Once the dam can be completely excluded, it is proposed to use a drone to spray select woody weeds around the dam inlet and outlet streams and then plant approximately 1000 native seedlings to stabilise the dam batters (reducing the risk of ongoing bank erosion) and to suitably vegetate the riparian regions.
Outcomes
Completely isolate this dam from stock access. Resulting in improvements to water quality and reducing the risk of future bank erosion.
Plant approximately 1000 native seedlings to greatly increase the waterway riparian vegetation.
By controlling weeds in this riparian region, we will prevent weeds from spreading and encourage native regeneration.
