Purchase PPE for volunteers
Establish at least 5 transect sites across the project
Enable community participation subject to risk assessments
Methods
The Wynyard Landcare group has partnered with the Waratah-Wynyard Council to promote biodiversity across our beaches, creeks and rivers.
Management & monitoring practices will be guided by experts from Landcare Tasmania, Cradle Coast NRM and the experience of our group members.
Promotion of regular events on social media to treat infestations & monitor changes in Sea Spurge density will provide opportunities for the community to join in practical activities to restore habitat in this environment.
Natural Values
Sea Spurge is an exotic weed that has infested the coastal areas of the NW. It is toxic to people, birds & animals and can become so dense that it impedes penguin and animal access to habitat and it replaces indigenous flora & fauna. It's removal and/or containment will enhance the amenity of the site for people and the ameliorate the degradation of these areas as habitat for a range of local species.
Outcomes
Reduced intensity of Sea Spurge infestations as measured by photographic evidence and reduced plant densities obtained by monitoring transects at test sites
Increases in the incidence of endemic species in treated areas
Increased community interest in weed management through attendance at treatment & monitoring events
