Burrow Making Workshop - Cooee Camdale Coastcare

"From 29th April to 3rd May 2019, Cooee-Camdale Coastcare will be holding burrow making workshops at the TasTAFE campus, Burnie. These burrows will be used to provide more nesting sites in an area that the group will be doing some revegetation work on during the winter months.

Winter 2018 brought storms that eroded large sections of the coastline and decimated areas of penguin habitat. As a result many penguins have moved west along the coastline towards Ocean Vista and Camdale where they are now competing for limited nest sites with the resident penguins. Many of the incoming penguins have taken advantage of the erosion and made burrows under the exposed roots of the wattles lining the foreshore. This is not an ideal location for nesting sites, as it is most likely they will be destroyed during future winter storms, or any king tides, and such burrows are likely to further undermine the wattles during future storms. The penguins have not been able to properly utilise the more elevated areas just inland of these wattles due to the limited number of nesting sites already being occupied.

During the week of workshops our aim is to make at least 24 burrows that will be placed in the area opposite Young's Veg Shed, and moving east towards Kennedy Street. The burrows are made of "tuffa", a mix of cement, sand and bark. TasTAFE has generously offered their site and equipment for the workshops, and Burnie City Council will be assisting with materials and transporting the finished burrows.

The program for that week (plus an extra day):
  • Monday 29th April: 9.30am to 3.30pm - Introduction, OH&S, preparation for burrows
  • Tuesday 30th April: 10am to 3.30pm - 1st batch of burrows (hoping to get a minimum of 8 made per session)
  • Wednesday 1st May: 10am to 3.30pm - 2nd batch
  • Thursday 2nd May: 10am to 3.30pm - 3rd batch
  • Friday 3rd May: 10am to 3pm  - An extra day if we need it to finish off making the burrows (hoping that we will not require this day - depends on how many volunteers we get)
  • Tuesday 14th May: 10am to 2.30pm - Move burrows outside to dry.
It is not necessary for participants to attend every day, and even if you can only give a few hours of your time, that would be greatly appreciated."
