Feral Cats in the Meander Valley
WHAT TO EXPECT
Discover how feral cats affect local wildlife, biodiversity and agriculture. This community info session will share knowledge from experienced people working with feral cats in the state. We will take an in-depth look at the impacts of feral cats on livestock and discuss strategies and management tools to mitigate these impacts, and also explore how the community can be involved.
SPEAKERS
Gillian Basnett – the National Feral Cat and Fox Management Coordinator (Centre for Invasive Species Solutions)
- Gill is working with local communities and stakeholders across Tasmania to raise awareness of the impacts of feral cats and to improve best practice control methods and their outcomes. She will be discussing various management tools and the current legislation around cat management.
John Bowden - Contract cat trapper
- John is a qualified and experienced feral cat trapper whose work takes him all over Tasmania and its islands. John will demonstrate how to use cat traps effectively and share his practical knowledge about baits. He will share first-hand experiences of the devastating impact of feral cats on the natural environment.
Bruce Jackson - Vet
- Bruce is Tasmania’s former senior veterinarian at DPIPWE and now works as a vet consultant. He has worked extensively on farm biosecurity and cat-borne diseases affecting agriculture and he will explain the impacts of cats on agricultural systems in Tasmania.
Peter Voller - Chair of West Tamar Landcare Group
- As a long-time Landcarer, Peter has decades of experience in community landcare and land management Peter will share insights on community-driven efforts of feral cat management.
Steve Hallett - Ranger at Meander Valley Council
- Steve is the Animal Control Ranger with Meander Valley Council. Steve will share with us the Council's perspective on cat management.
Morning tea will be provided.
WHO CAN COME
Everyone is welcome. No prior knowledge or experience in Landcare required. It would be great to see a mix of Landcarers, private property owners, community groups and local organisations join us.
