Landcare Tas out and about

28th March 2023 |

We've been having a blast at some fantastic events, from Bream Creek Show, to the BIG Weekend of Sustainable Living Ideas, to North-West Ecofest.  We love sharing what Landcare is all about and meeting really cool people while we're at it.

Bream Creek Show - 18th March 2023

We hosted a bustling stall sharing information about our Project Bank, which rodenticides to avoid, plants for sale, and the biochar kiln.

Bill Harvey was very busy talking to people about making biochar from woody weeds and the benefits of doing this for climate change and soil health. A great day out at the show!

SLT's BIG Weekend of Sustainable Living Ideas - 25th & 26th March 2023

The Botanical institute was full of diverse stalls offering native plants, Tasmanian grown seeds, organic fertilizer, African food, pottery classes, workshops on native edible plants, composting classes, fermentation workshops. -

We got to catch up with lots of familiar faces and LTas partners such as the Understorey Network, 24 Carrot Gardens, members of the Bridgewater Foreshore Group, and Brighton Council.

Peter Stronach took interested patrons for a walk along the foreshore, looking at the success of previous plantings from the Bridgewater Foreshore Landcare group. We got to hear stories about the land use history, migratory birds, mammals, and native and exotic species.  An reflected on the fact that this area would have been an open grassland managed by Indigenous communities for protein.

We also got an opportunity to collect seed from an old and well-established Prickly Box (Bursaria spinosa) from along the foreshore.  These will be used to grow plants for the Bridgewater Foreshore to use in the future!

Bill’s biochar kiln was an absolute hit! Patrons flocked to hear bill talk about how to create a sustainable and cost effective soil supplement from weed cuttings – Biochar helps improve soil water retention, microbial habitat and plant health, as well as sequestering carbon soil.

North-West Ecofest - 1st April 2023

We're looking forward to joining the impressive cohort of stallholders at this year's North-West Ecofest.
