Recap from Agfest 2025

8 May 2025 | With spectacular weather and huge crowds, our Landcare Tas team came back with lots of stories from their time at Agfest 2025.

It was fantastic to see such a diverse group of visitors at our Landcare Tasmania site at Agfest 2025. We had the pleasure of reconnecting with long-time members who shared valuable updates on their ongoing projects, as well as meeting newcomers just starting out and looking to learn more about what Landcare has to offer.
A major highlight of Agfest was the launch of our Decision Guide for Stray and Feral Cat Management in Tasmania 2025, now available on our website. This new resource helps landowners and community groups understand what they can do when it comes to managing stray and feral cats—an issue that continues to affect both native wildlife and agricultural land.
We were fortunate to have Gill Bassnet from the National Fox and Feral Cat Task Force join us to speak about coordinated cat management efforts in Tasmania. She was joined by John Bowerman, who shared his years of hands-on experience in cat trapping, including practical tips and lessons learned from working in the field.
We also had a visit from Bruce Jackson, who shared the latest research on the distribution of toxoplasmosis. He highlighted an important finding: that off-dam watering points can significantly reduce the incidence of toxoplasmosis in livestock—a topic that drew great interest from both farmers and land managers alike.
Many visitors also discovered a bit of fun at our site by finding the hidden Tasmanian devil, roaring away and sparking plenty of smiles—especially from the younger Agfest crowd!
With the presence of the upcoming federal election, we also had the opportunity to catch up with many of the political parties and representatives to highlight the importance of the work being done by Landcare groups and individuals across Tasmania. It was a valuable chance to advocate for continued support and investment to ensure this vital work can continue into the future.
With discussions ranging from farm dam enhancement to responsible pet ownership, sustainable land practices, and how to get involved in your local Landcare group, the energy at our site was inspiring. We look forward to continuing the conversations sparked during Agfest and welcoming more Tasmanians into the Landcare movement.

And finally, a big thank you to the JM Roberts Charitable Trust, whose support helped make it possible for us to connect meaningfully with our members and community groups throughout the event.
