Rodenticide Information and Q&A Session

Second generation rat poisons are killing our birds of prey. Owls, Wedge Tailed Eagles, Goshawks, and Peregrines are all species that are impacted by rodenticides. 

Their deaths have serious implications for native ecosystems and humans alike. Households, businesses, farms, schools, and councils are all examples of places that may use these harmful poisons.

Information and Q&A Session

There are ways to deal with rodents that are much less harmful for our raptors. Come along to an information session in our Week of Rodenticide Awareness to find out:

• Which poisons are most harmful
• What effect these poisons are having on birds of prey
• What the alternatives are
• What you can easily do to help stop the deaths of our raptors

Tasmanian raptor specialist Nick Mooney will be sharing his knowledge on this concerning issue. He will be joined by a panel of knowledgeable speakers who will be able to answer your questions in this information and Q&A session.

About the Keynote Speaker - Nick Mooney

For more than 40 years Nick has studied the impact on wildlife of changes in landscapes and peoples’ attitudes. Particular focus has been on trying to accommodate birds of prey and in development and has often been a leader in studying and managing emerging threats such as Devil facial Tumour Disease.

Nick left the public service 10 years ago but continues as a volunteer with devil and raptor management, a consultant on various threatening processes and works as a wildlife tourism guide. Nick was a founding member of the BirdLife Australia Raptor Group and sits on the Save The Tasmanian Devil program’s steering committee and WildCares Gift Fund board, is an honorary curator at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery and the technical advisor for the Raptor Refuge.

Nick’s concern over the gulf between reality and peoples’ perceptions of nature leads him to be a regular contact for the media, community groups and interested individuals.
