Rivers to Ramsar with NRM South

Landcare Tasmania is joining NRM South on their transformative new "Rivers to Ramsar: improving catchment and wetland health at Orielton Lagoon" Project

We’re excited to share that Landcare Tasmania, in partnership with NRM South, Sorell Landcare Group, and Sorell Council, will be delivering the Sorell Rivulet component of the Rivers to Ramsar Project.

The project will focus on tackling some of the big challenges facing the catchment—rapid urban development, invasive weeds, and declining water quality. By restoring native vegetation and improving habitat connectivity, the works will not only enhance the health of the rivulet but also protect critical wetland habitat for threatened migratory birds in the nearby Pittwater Orielton Lagoon Ramsar site.

Throughout 2026 and 2027, we’ll be working along a one-kilometre stretch of the rivulet to:

  • Remove debris and improve water flow

  • Carry out erosion control works

  • Remove invasive weeds including willow, hawthorn, boxthorn, and fennel

  • Re-establish native vegetation through planting

  • Install stock-exclusion fencing to protect sensitive areas

Community involvement will be a key part of the project. A series of events and activities will be held to bring people together and build local stewardship of the rivulet. These will include waterbug and water quality workshops, community planting days, and ongoing maintenance activities.

Together, these efforts will help restore the Sorell Rivulet, improve water quality, and strengthen habitat corridors that connect our urban areas with the internationally significant wetlands downstream.
