This project aims to provide assistance and funding for farmers, landholders and land managers to protect, maintain, enhance and reduce threats to High Conservation Value Areas (HVCA).
HCVA includes areas with threatened species & vegetation, healthy intact vegetation, riparian areas, wetlands and vegetation linkages within the landscape.
We are hosting a series of events for people caring for both covenanted and non-covenanted high conservation value areas.
If you are interested in how natural capital supports biodiversity, climate resilience, water quality, farm productivity as well as national and international biodiversity targets, then come and learn about ways to protect these special areas and support for their maintenance at one of three events in the south, north west and north.
In Tasmania, there are over 900 formal Conservation Covenants protecting high conservation areas on private land (roughly 4.2% of private property). They contribute to state and national efforts to protect and conserve 30% of Australia's landmass - the '30 by 30' target. The Private Land Conservation Program works with landowners to sustainably manage and conserve natural values on private land and is the main point of contact for the State's private land conservation programs.
However, there is still lots of high conservation land that is not formally protected yet managed under private ownership. Many land managers are maintaining and protecting their high conservation areas without a formal covenant. For example, they may be a part of the Land for Wildlife Program managed by the Tasmanian Land Conservacy, part of Landcare Tasmania's membership, protected under a Part 5 Agreement with their Council or simply caring and managing it themselves.
At the end of 2025, after two year hiatus, Conservation Landholders Tasmania (CLT) has reformed. They are a state-wide group that represents covenants owners and managers of high conservation value land.

Landcare Tasmania and CLT warmly invite you to three events across the state to help address the barriers, knowledge gaps and support needs faced by land managers in protecting, enhancing and maintaining covenants and high conservation value areas.

In the context of this project, high conservation value areas are defined as areas with one or more of the following values:
● areas of endemic, rare, threatened, or endangered species or vegetation communities,
● areas that provide connectivity in the landscape including riparian areas,
● intact natural wetlands and waterbodies
● areas with significant native vegetation in moderate to healthy condition
This project is funded by the State Government's Landcare Action Grants V3: Round 9 2026-2027, and is part of Landcare Tasmania's Landscape Restoration and Community Outreach Programs.
