21 June 2024 - Every year we take a snapshot of our membership. Our members form a vast network of people across the state who are making a real positive difference in their local environments. So, who are they and what are they working on? We'll have a look at 3 types of membership: Member Groups, Individual Members, and Associate Members.
311 Member Groups
Member Groups are Landcare, Bushcare, Coastcare, 'Friends-of' groups, and other groups of people whose primary aim is to improve the health of our natural and working landscapes. A group can form around a location (a reserve, a property, group of properties, or school) or a topic (e.g. threatened species, community nursery). Member groups are Landcare Tasmania's main focus for support, and they are the only members who have voting rights. For more information on forming a Landcare Group, read our Info for Landcare Groups.
Landcare Tasmania has sustained over 300 member groups since 2022.
We have three broad categories of member groups:
Community groups - make up the vast majority of member groups. They are made of members of a community who come together to support each other on a chosen issue or at a certain location, and sometimes work in close association with a local council or Parks & Wildlife. These include community associations, Bushcare & Coastcare groups, Wildcare groups, conservation groups, and many other groups.
School groups - These are Landcare groups who form at schools who have a distinct Landcaring element at their school - be it a kitchen garden, neighbouring bushland, dedicated nature play, or sustainability focus - or all of the above!
Property groups - These are typically landholders whose groups are made up of family and neighbours, and coordinate volunteers for extra-hands.
What do Landcare Member Group volunteers contribute?
Our renewing groups reported on their volunteer activity in 2023:
- 6,900+ regular volunteers - the number of volunteers who attend activities.
- The average size of a Landcare group is 23 regular volunteers, with 6 leaders or committee members.
- 4,800+ events were held around the state, including working bees, meetings, outings, market stalls, info sessions, workshops, and school activities
- 176,000+ hours were contributed by volunteers. That's roughly the equivalent of 100 people working full time all year!
What issues are member groups addressing, and what activities do they participate in?
Biodiversity is by far the most common issue that our groups are aiming to address. Other top issues include erosion control, a changing climate, sustainable agriculture, and waste management. The activities they work on to address these issues are hugely varied. The top activities have always been weed control, revegetation and clean-ups.
Where are Member Groups active?
We asked our member groups whether their activities take place on public or private land, in natural, rural, urban, or agricultural settings, and in what type of habitats. There are many groups who are active in multiple settings.
171 Individual Members
Becoming an individual member of Landcare Tasmania is a great way to demonstrate your personal support for the community Landcare movement in Tasmania. Individuals don't have voting rights, but they get access to our members-only resources including grants. These individual members hail from 21 of Tasmania's municipalities, plus a few interstate. They give financial support and/or are active in Landcaring in many ways. We've seen such a huge growth in individual members in the past few years, and our 2024 member survey shows a little bit about who they are and their primary reasons for joining the community Landcare movement.
Many of our individual members are landholders who are actively undertaking on-ground projects, but aren't able to coordinate volunteers to form a Landcare group, and prefer to mostly handle projects on their own. Some individual members volunteer in one or more member groups, some have joined because they work in a Landcare-related sector and want to be part of our network, and some join just to show their support for what we do!
