Premaydena Garden

Connecting community and heritage, Premaydena Garden was formed in 2014 under the auspices of the Impression Bay Community Development Association (IBCDA). The group aims to create a public garden space, Premaydena Garden, on six acres of land surrounding the old convict site at 1 Jones Road, Premaydena. We are transforming a paddock into a working community garden which celebrates the rich heritage of the area - Aboriginal, settler and modern. In a setting of native and exotic trees, plants, vegetables and flowers, the Garden will encompass a picnic site, a performance amphitheatre and, at the highest point of the block, a viewing platform overlooking the old Convict Probation Station. In 2019 a grant from the Tasmanian Community Fund allowed us to install fundamental and comprehensive water infrastructure which makes the Garden viable. We also built a shade house from re-cycled materials, and have planted hundreds of trees, shrubs and plants.  All this has happened in our fortnightly Working Bees. These are well-attended and highly productive; we work together, eat together and learn skills from each other. This is a vibrant community project which brings together volunteers from diverse sectors of the community; its continuing success relies entirely on the commitment of locals. We have jobs for everyone from IT specialists to those who are better at wielding a spade.
